Does anyone remember Milwaukee from the 50's and 60's?
We used to drive down for the day when I was little. After supper at Mader's we would drive back. I remember all the neon lights making an impression on me. One in particular was a genie riding a magic carpet. I believe he was going up the side of a building or moving upward in a zig-zag manner. Does anyone else remember this or have any information on what it was?

Thanks (from an oldie)

1. Northshore Line
I remember riding on the Northshore Line from Racine to Milwaukee. I loved riding the older cars. Sorry I don't remember more.

2. I have memories of Milwaukee in the 60's and 70's
Your description rings a vague bell, but it might only be from memories of the many other animated neon signs I saw back then.

Do you have any more specific idea of where in the city it was? North side, Sous side, West side, etc? Which direction would you have been heading? There were a bunch of elaborate marquees I remember along Wisconsin Avenue and all along Highway 100.

An intersection or street would be great. I drove a taxi in Milwaukee as an adult for about 7 years, so I'm fairly familiar with where various things are (or were in the 80's), and where things used to be.

BTW, I just came up with this interesting retro-list of Milwaukee icons on google while looking for genie sign clues:

I had great fun reading it. Unfortunately, I am now craving a Suburpia sub something fierce.

6. Heading west on Wisconsin Ave from downtown, it would have been
off to the right. I also remember the genie with the flame head. I seem to remember it flickering at the top of a chimney or tall tower. Maybe it was all part of the same display.

On the right is a genie, which I believe was for Wisconsin Gas. Did it look like that?

4. what a fun site. Do you remember
what the different colors of the flame atop the gas co. building meant? I remember my dad reciting it, but I can't make the words come in. He drove city bus for many years.

5. Here you go.....
When the flame is red, it's warm weather ahead.
When the flame is gold, watch out for cold.
When the flame is blue, there's no change in view.
Where there's agitation, expect precipitation.
