Keith’s angry Scot faces child pornography charges...

The Toronto actor best known for playing the kilted angry Scotsman in a series of Alexander Keith’s beer commercials is facing child pornography charges.

Labatt Breweries reacted to the news by pulling the advertising campaign off the air.

The Toronto Police Service issued a news release Wednesday stating that Robert Norman Smith, 40, was arrested and has been charged with two counts of possession of child pornography and one count of making it available over the Internet.

Police would not confirm that the arrested man is the actor of the same name who berates "spilly talkers" and promotes Keith’s beer as "the pride of Nova Scotia" on television commercials.

1. Well, now I no longer have to boycott Keith's!

Honestly, that series of commercials was about as pleasant as dental surgery. I would hit MUTE every time they came on, or even change the station. Smith's shrill voice and outrageously bad "Scottish" accent drove me up the fucking wall. And I sure wasn't going to drink the beer as long as they kept running these spots. I even contacted them and said, "Look, I'm telling everybody I know to boycott Keith's Ale until you stop these commercials, and to pass it on to all their friends, too. If I were Scots, I'd be insulted." The commercials remained, but now, hurrah! they'll be gone!

3. Those fucking ads were the reason the mute button was invented.

I am sick to death of screaming fake Scottish accents being used to plug everything from gum to whatever.

It was funny when Mike Meyers did the "if it's not Scottish, it's crap" character on Saturday Night Live. ONCE.

4. All Canadian commercials are screwed...

NOT because there is the odd one that is clever and amusing, but because there are so few 'premium' advertisers, you end up seeing the fuckin' commercial 10 times over the space of an hour long program.

Let's face it--that HBC ad that swipes the 'Hey Jude' theme is way way over played to the point that there should be some sorta law against 'heavy rotation' promotion...the idea is to actually brainwash you. It's fine to 'persuade', but ad rotation like that is simply corrupt and covers up the fact, most Canadian media doesn't have the ad clout.

The repetition is unbearable during Hockey Night in Canada--all those Telus ads and GM ads...constantly.

(Remember the old days when they had those awful funny 'Kraft Kitchen ads' where a disembodied set of hands would whip up some puke-y KRAFT cheese cassarole...--those were the days)
