Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Afghanistan's president has assured him an Afghan man who converted to Christianity will not be executed.
Harper said on Thursday President Hamid Karzai had "conveyed to me that we don't have to worry about any such eventual outcome" during a telephone conversation on Wednesday.
Karzai also said the issue would be resolved quickly, Harper said.
"We are a small country and we welcome the help the outside world is giving us. But please don't interfere in this issue," said cleric Mirhossain Nasri.

A 72-year-old Edmonton grandmother is trying to collect 5,000 signatures for a petition to have bail revoked for four young people charged in the recent beating death of a man on a bus.
Frances Kitzul said she's gotten close to 200 phone calls over the past few days since beginning her quest.
"It's happening too many times now for young offenders or anyone to get out on bail with the crime. I believe that the public should be heard," said Kitzul.
Medieval justice
"Well if this was a trend, it would be a troublesome trend because in our justice system, judges can't and should not be rendering decisions based on popular support," said Lukaszuk.
"Because we would have to go back to the 1600s and say, 'do we hang him?' If they say yes, we hang him. And that's not what our justice system is based on."
