John Godfrey bows out of Liberal leadership race, citing health concerns

OTTAWA (CP) - The federal Liberal leadership contest has only just begun, but already one of the handful of declared candidates is walking away from the race.

Toronto-area MP John Godfrey told a news conference Wednesday that unstated health concerns have forced him to withdraw. He said he will focus on his role as intergovernmental affairs critic and on his own political agenda - sustainable development, social justice and Canadian sovereignty.

"Over the past two months, I've had some concerns about the state of my physical health," said Godfrey, 63. "On the advice of my doctor, I have undergone a series of tests. On Monday evening, he informed me that he was recommending further tests.

"Clearly, although he and I are very optimistic about the anticipated results, these continuing concerns are a serious distraction from the leadership campaign."
