Use 12,000 troops to guard Canadian border, U.S. urged

WASHINGTON — A task force appointed by a Republican congressman from Georgia has recommended that at least 12,000 National Guard troops and additional agents be deployed on the U.S.-Canada border to halt what it fears is a growing flow of illegal immigrants.

"We're talking about tens of thousands of illegal immigrants a year coming from Canada," said John Stone, deputy chief of staff to Charlie Norwood -- a Republican who is active in the immigration reform caucus, which is pushing for tough measures to stop illegal immigration, particularly from Mexico.

Mr. Stone and four retired military and border-patrol officials named by Mr. Norwood have recommended the deployment of 8,000 National Guard soldiers to secure the border with Canada, including round-the-clock surveillance of 1,000 hard-surface roads crossing the border that are currently not patrolled.

In a 22-page report, the task force says that these unmanned roads "currently provide . . . quick exit for intruders."

1. Why on earth would anyone want to move from Canada to the US?
Especially now! I mean, I can understand people wanting to flee their poverty in Mexico and search for a better life north of the border. Of course, by that standard, Canada should be standing on guard against tens of thousands of illegal American immigrants.

2. This is a joke! Another crazy paranoid Republican.
Of course there AREN'T tens of thousands of Canadians "escaping" to the United States. It's laughable!
This reminds me of a very funny bit Jason Jones did on Jon Stewart's show. Here's a link for anyone who hasn't seen it!

5. And another thing......as I remember it, these "Minutemen" were up here in
Canada a few months ago "patrolling" our borders in a determined effort to stop the so-called influx of illegals, and they gave up after a couple of weeks and went home....since they never encountered anyone to turn back. The whole thing is a giant joke!

7. Imagine if Canada put 12000 troops on the U.S. border
The Pentagon would have a fit, and accuse us of planning an invasion, as improbable as that scenario would be.

8. I wonder if it's more of an East German scenario
You may remember that East Germany always claimed that it put up the Berlin Wall to prevent West Germans from coming in (never mind that East Germans were walking over to West Berlin by the hundreds every day in 1961.)

I've always thought that if things got really bad in the States, I do know some escape routes across the Canadian border that would bypass "civilization."

Maybe I'd find barbed wire strung up Stateside if I tried it.
