A North American security meeting was secretly held in Banff last week, attracting high-profile officials from the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The North American Forum was hosted with the help of the Canada West Foundation and the Canadian Council of Chief Executives.

Among the attendees at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel affair was Stockwell Day, Canada's minister of public safety.

The gathering may not have made headlines, but it is still the talk of Banff.

A meeting of Canadian, American and Mexican political and business interests at the Fairmont Banff Springs, Sept. 12-14 has been labelled disgraceful by those concerned with the apparent secrecy which surrounded the event.

A peaceful protest is being organized for Monday, Sept. 25 at 3 p.m., outside the famous hotel.

According to leaked documents obtained by Edmonton publisher Mel Hurtig, the North American Forum (NAF) in Banff was held under the joint chairmanship of fomer U.S. Secretary of State George Schultz, Pedro Aspe, former finance minister of Mexico, and former Alberta premier Peter Lougheed.

Hurtig, former leader of the federal National Party, which fielded candidates in the 1993 federal election, said a friend sent him a list of attendees to the event, and an agenda.

One of the cornerstones of the Hurtig-founded National Party was opposition to the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. For that reason, Hurtig is concerned with the apparent Canada-U.S.-Mexico mix of conference attendees.

Some of the most powerful and influential people in the western world apparently cruised into Banff last week for a little confab, completely unbeknownst to the rest of the world.

In their midst were politicians, former politicians, ambassadors, presidents of oil companies, a Nobel Laureate in chemistry, top ranking military officials, seriously senior business and corporate honchos and a handful of lawyers well-versed in international law.

Among those on the invite list were U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld; Canadian Rear Admiral Roger Giurouard, Canadian General Rick Hillier, Alberta Energy Minister Greg Melchin; U.S. Admiral Tim Keating, and

Dr. Ronald F. Lehman II, Director of the Centre for Global Security Research, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. (That school, by the way, is a United States Department of Energy national laboratory, one of two in the U.S. whose mission has included the design of nuclear weapons.)

Here's the scandal that should be outraging Canadians across the country. On September 12-14, elite proponents of deep integration from Canada, the U.S. and Mexico met at a secret conference at the Banff Springs Hotel. Stockwell Day, Tom d'Aquino and other high-profile Canadians were there. But the Hotel doesn't want to talk about it. No major media reported on the conference-- Yet the topic of the conference, deep integration or the formation of a "North American Community" aka the North American Union, will profoundly affect everything in our lives from our health and security to the currency we use (soon to be the "Amero") to our very national identity. In essence, we will no longer be Canadians, but North Americans only--and worse, North Americans hog-tied in lock-step with the U.S. even as they gain open access to our energy resources.
