Beleaguered former media baron Conrad Black says he is a "freedom fighter" who did not commit any crimes and ardently denies he will enter into a plea bargain with U.S. prosecutors in the criminal case he is facing.
"It will go to court," Black says in an interview set to air on Ontario's TVO television channel on Monday night. "There will be absolutely no discussion of any plea bargain. I committed no offence and there will be no discussion of any such thing."
Black is charged with skimming millions of dollars and misusing company perks while heading Toronto-based Hollinger Inc. and Chicago-based Hollinger International Inc. — since renamed Sun-Times Media Group Inc.
The Canadian-born Black — who is a member of Britain's House of Lords — along with three other Hollinger Inc. executives, is set to go on trial in Chicago for racketeering, fraud and other charges in March.
