OTTAWA - A Liberal MP ignited an uproar in the House of Commons on Monday by openly challenging the courage of federal border guards in B.C. who walked off the job over the weekend after learning that an armed murder suspect was approaching the border.
''That's because they are a bunch of wimps!'' shouted Derek Lee, vice-chairman of the House of Commons justice committee, as a New Democratic Party MP pressed the Conservative government to speed up its plan to arm border guards.
Public Security Minister Stockwell Day, who recently announced a 10-year, $101 million initiative to tighten border security and arm guards, later rose in question period to condemn Lee.
''Our border officers are not wimps,'' Day said.
