3. This is a classic Pyhrric victory for Harper

He won the battle to stay in power for a short time longer, but the tide is turning against the PC. He's finished.

4. The latest polls are giving Harper a 20-point lead with 46%.

I don't think that can possibly be maintained over the coming several weeks with Harper leading an impotent Parliament--designed by Harper himself only to save his own ass--during extremely critical economic times. It doesn't help him that Ontario's unemployment rate just went from 6.5% in October to 7.1% in November. And at 77 cents, our dollar hasn't been this weak since about September 2004.

OTOH, where will that support go? A lot of people (and, I suspect, all of the present Harper supporters) are seriously pissed off at the Liberals and the NDP right now. Compared to the election results, their support has dropped since the coalition formed, and I just can't see that many would warm up to them again for a long time. This notion, right or wrong, of them being in bed with separatists has freaked them right out.

And on CBC's At Issue last night, all three pundits pretty much declared the coalition to be toast.

This has been really interesting to watch.

5. Baffling, isn't it?

That this ridiculous situation would benefit Harper, given the circumstances you just described. (job loss, dollar, etc...)

I'm thinking this 'new support' for Harper has more to do with allowing him to continue governing, vs handing him a majority in an election.

Where would this majority support come from? Not Quebec....and not Ontario with these job losses piling up.


As a full supporter of the coalition, I'm not entirely sad to see Harper stay on as PM. I'm ok with the idea of this Reform Party having a minority during a recession. We're more likely to see a Liberal minority next time around. Propped up by the NDP, we could see things turn around in this country, within 2 yrs.

If I had a dime for every poll that said Harper was going to win a majority, I could have a nice dinner in an expensive restaurant, and have money left over for a new pair of shoes.

7. This two week Parliament was a preview

Of the things that Harper really wants to do: eliminate workers rights (specifically the right for public workers to strike), and attack public election funding. He tried this with a minority government. People just need to imagine what he'll do with a majority.

This guy comes from Reform. He isn't of the same cloth as even the old Progressive Conservatives. So he is more right-wing than I think many have realized. I hope that Canadians take note.

His ilk hate all public funding of anything. They want to deligitimize it all, and their eventual target is public health care.

Cracks in the coalition may be easily repaired by another Bully-motion.


The question remains; Will Harper have learned from this, and try more moderate legislation? Or will he try another bully move.


I'll guess the answer will be based on polling data he gets....But I do think he'll present a more moderate budget to at least seem to be cooperating....for now.

11. I don't think he will compromise

He is angling for an election, and will ensure another poison pill is in his budget. He has given up on the Quebec break-through (woo Quebec) and is setting his sights on an Ontario break-through via anti-French sentiment (screw Quebec).

I suspected this would be the plan when I saw how the CTV's release of the Dion interview tape was used to play upon anti-French sentiment (and it worked to a limited extent).
