QUEBEC - Jean Pelletier, a close confidant of Jean Chretien who was dubbed the "elegant executioner," died of cancer on Saturday. He was 73.

Pelletier was admitted to St-Sacrement Hospital in Quebec City on New Year's Eve and later transferred to the Maison Michel-Sarrazin hospice for cancer patients in the final stages of their illness.

He was visited by a number of friends before he died, including former prime minister Jean Chretien and Quebec City Mayor Regis Labeaume.

Born in Chicoutimi, Que., on Feb. 21, 1935, Pelletier's life was marked by successes and controversy in the political world.
