WASHINGTON — U.S. President Barack Obama, in one of his first acts as commander-in-chief, started shifting America's war-fighting focus from Iraq to Afghanistan.
At a late-afternoon meeting on a frenetic first day in the Oval Office, he delivered on a long-standing campaign promise to convene a war council on Day 1 and consider options for speeding up the end to the occupation of Iraq.
Mr. Obama has also vowed to shift the central front in the war against Islamic extremism to Afghanistan.
“One of the biggest mistakes we've made strategically after 9/11 was to fail to finish the job” in Afghanistan, Mr. Obama said last year. “We got distracted by Iraq,” where former president George W. Bush started a war in 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein's government.
