The GG Caved.

December 30, 2009 7:08 PM
By Kady O'Malley

Official confirmation that Parliament has, indeed, been prorogued, straight from the Clerk of the House of Commons:

1. "A Governor General must take all steps necessary ...
"A Governor General must take all steps necessary to thwart the will of a ruthless prime minister." Eugene Forsey, May 29, 1904 – February 20, 1991...known as Canada's best constitutional expert.

I'm sure he's spinning in his grave today.

2. Disgusting but not surprising given her previous caving to Harper....
This is the second time she has given Canadian citizens the finger, imo, two time too many.

3. Harp is proroguing the HOC to avoid a lawful order of Parliament.
I could see her helping him out of a mess, once.

But this time, and for the reasons given, no.

4. I have NEVER thought she was qualified to be Governor General!
I've always gotten the feeling that she just likes playing the role!

5. She does well at the ceremonial part.
Projects the right image, does the right things, makes the appropriate soothing noises and so on, but when it comes to her real job...'the puck stops here' so to speak...she's failed miserably. Twice now.

6. Exactly.....She's all show. We should either have a person
well versed in Canadian law and history as Governor General or abolish the job. IMO.

9. No, Clarkson was prepared to use
her reserve power, and said so. I imagine others would have done so if necessary. It's just that govts try not to put the GG in that position.

11. Well obviously you won't see it,
considering the kind of GG we currently have. Other govts did not put the GG in that situation.

7. At least she's good at eating seal blubber
I guess that's the GG's main function nowadays.

12. Canadians don't care, apparently. Sigh. Harper's lucky to have such an indifferent public.

13. I think Canadians care, it's just that we
don't have an alternative as yet.

14. Nah, they really don't care:
***But he doesn't expect much of a public backlash from the move. The public does not seem to get worked up about the erosion of Parliamentary power, he said.

His feeling is echoed privately by Tory MPs, and by a poll showing that 46 per cent of Canadians just don't care whether Parliament starts sitting in January or takes a break and comes back after the Olympics in March.

"There's a high level of indifference," said pollster Doug Anderson with Harris Decima.***

15. The poll was done before the prorogue,
when it was only a vague rumour. Apparently once he did it, the mood changed.

16. Sorry, you're right. I couldn't find the actual poll referenced and neither could this CBC reporter:
http://www.cbc.ca/politics/insidepolitics/2010/01/proroguewatch-the-aftermath---so-what-are-the-boys-and-girls-saying.html

According to this article the poll was taken between December 17th and 20th. I hate when polls are misleadingly used to fit a narrative.

17. Yeah, it was a cheap trick.
I wish we had a decent media in this country. We either don't hear about events, or we get a misleading view of them.
