Feds to match Canadian donations, dollar for dollar
The federal government announced it will match, dollar for dollar, Canadians' individual donations to registered charities to support the relief and recovery efforts in Haiti -- up to a total of $50 million.

1. Why stop at fifty million?
We spend way more than that in Afghanistan.

2. There is always money for war.
Compassion, however, has it's limits.

3. Good question, and I agree.
I heard on some news channel this morning they were upping it to 100 million, whether that was accurate or not. Better though ....

4. It turns out that it is only some charities
And that the money won't go to the charity (the matching federal money), but to CIDA. Also, money has to be donated by an individual (no group fund raising like churches or unions), and it has to be earmarked for Haiti by the charity.

Some of these are reasonable precautions against fraud, I suppose.

7. It doesn't change the fact that the headline
"Feds to match Canadian donations" is misleading.

I worked for years in accounting and the number of people who do not understand that any government spending comes from us, the taxpayers, is beyond belief.

9. Oh I definitely realize it's 'our' money from taxation the feds
are matching personal donations with. Not sure what you find so unbelievable here ....... nobody thinks the feds go out and mow lawns to live on.

Seriously.
