PM's office attacks top banker in deficit spat

OTTAWA–Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office went after one of Bay Street's top figures – TD Bank CEO Ed Clark – for saying senior Canadian executives favour higher taxes to slay Ottawa's deficit.

It all started when Clark said at a a conference in Florida last week how much Canadians despise the budget deficit.

He spoke about a prebudget consultation he recently had with Harper.

"He doesn't listen, but you get to chat with him," the TD Bank chief executive remarked. The comments did not go unnoticed in Harper's office.

Not many left that he hasn't attacked.

A speech in Florida that would have remained unknown in Canada, but Harper makes an issue of it and it comes to our attention in headlines.

And to single out and attack an individual with the full force of govt....for a simple disagreement with the govt

I can't see Bay St, or anyone for that matter approving of this.

Have I mentioned how much I've come to hate the phrase 'hard-working Canadians'? It's like Harper's chosen few do all the work, and the rest of the country is goofing off.
