Ignatieff promises to freeze corporate tax cuts

MONTREAL—Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff promised if elected to cancel $6 billion a year in the Conservatives' planned corporate tax cuts to pay for what the Liberals are portraying as a more caring, environmentally friendly and smarter society in the years ahead.

“We've got to create fiscal room to realize some dreams,” Ignatieff said after a three-day thinkers' conference.

The Conservatives' commitment to continue phasing in billions of dollars in corporate tax cuts at a time when Ottawa is running a $54 billion annual budget deficit has been harshly criticized by the New Democrats. But Ignatieff's vow to freeze business taxes came as a complete surprise to observers and Liberals.

We have a clear choice: tackling the Conservative deficit and starting to invest in our future, or giving further tax cuts to corporations before when we can afford them,” Ignatieff explained.

However, the last thing we need is another king. The event was billed as an ideas sort of thing. Now Iggy culminates the event with this statement.

If you want to build a consensus then it has to come from a group.

I am not knocking the idea. If this was an agreed upon idea of the Liberal party then fine. Where have we heard about it before. Why didn't the Liberals oppose it in parliament?

There are many other things that I find reasonable. And many that I find are required.

Where is the willingness or effort to come up with a policy or policies?
