Ontario, Alberta and B.C. could get more MPs

The Conservative government has introduced a bill that would add 30 seats in the House of Commons for Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia — almost double the number of seats for Ontario that had been proposed in a similar bill three years ago.


The legislation, called the Democratic Representation Bill, extends the throne speech promise of representation by population to the three faster-growing provinces in Canada.


Under the proposed legislation, Ontario would get 18 new seats, Alberta would get five and B.C. seven, for a total of 338 seats. If passed, the changes likely would be implemented in 2014.

I'm wary. As an Ontarian, it looks good to me on the surface, but I don't believe Harper would be doing this if it didn't work in his favour.

This issue comes up every few years. Last time we went to 308 MPs.

2. Much depends on where the seats are redistributed within the provinces

Most of the growth has been in and around the major cities, so that's where the new seats should go.

and really far too big for one MP to cover.
