Several of the opposition questions were inspired by a CTV report that’s been the talk of the Hill on Wednesday. In a piece that aired the night before, the network’s Ottawa bureau chief, Robert Fife, said the mystery allegations were brought forward to a Conservative lawyer by a private investigator. The investigator reportedly came across a threat of blackmail related to allegations about the purchase and use of drugs.

“The culture of secrecy of these Conservatives is reaching new heights,” NDP Leader Jack Layton said. “Now we learn that the Prime Minister referred a matter to the RCMP based on a report from Magnum, P.I.
“Why? What is the origin here? ... Tell us what the private eye told him. At least give us a hint as to why the RCMP is involved.”

Although it is being reported flippantly, I think this is a very serious question. Does the government of Canada hire private investigators to tail private citizens? Alternatively, does the Conservative Party?
