Germany tries arms dealer linked to Kohl scandal
AUGSBURG, Germany - A German-Canadian arms dealer went on trial on Monday on charges of tax evasion, fraud and bribery arising from a funding scandal that rocked Germany's conservative Christian Democrats a decade ago.

Karlheinz Schreiber, a colourful Bavarian who spent 10 years fighting his extradition to Germany, denied wrongdoing. His lawyer Jan Olaf Leisner read a statement rejecting the charges and accusing German justice authorities of prejudice.

A former junior defence minister was found guilty in 2005 of corruption, saying he received 2 million euros ($3 million US) for deals with Schreiber, who sold armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia. Schreiber, 75, is at the heart of a scandal over party slush funds which disgraced former Christian Democrat Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who was forced to quit as honorary party leader after admitting he accepted illegal party donations.
