Canwest: Stephen Harper has wandered into a quagmire
A seemingly enlightened decision by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to have upcoming G8 meetings in Ontario focus on global maternal health has backfired on his government.

Instead of reaping the political benefits of promoting a mainstream, moderate policy issue, the government – by taking a stand against support for foreign aid programs that would fund abortions – has reinforced fears about its so-called secret right-wing agenda.

The Harper government did not need to create such trouble for itself. The maternal-health initiative announced in January was a worthy one and might well have helped Conservatives, desirous of winning a majority government, to broaden their base and boost their appeal among female voters.

But they quickly got sidetracked into a discussion of whether overseas abortions would be funded.

1. They should have seen that one coming.
I guess they got carried away with the idea that it was definitely a 'motherhood' issue, and NObody could be against it - and forgot about the other issues involved.

2. It's another example of not seeking advice
A lot of the problems of the Harper government stem from the fact that they hate the bureaucracy, and think they know everything, and don't need advice from anyone.

because of this, they end up creating totally avoidable and stupid problems for themselves.

It's one of the few things about the Harper government that brightens my day.

3. Yes, and they can take the most minor of things,
easily handleable in 5 minutes and then gone, and turn it into screaming national headlines that last for weeks.

It's a strange talent.
