OTTAWA — Former Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer has been cleared of wrongdoing by the RCMP, Jaffer's lawyer said Wednesday.
The Jaffer announcement came hours after police said they have also absolved Helena Guergis, Jaffer's wife and a former cabinet minister in Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government, of wrongdoing. The couple had been at the centre of a parliamentary firestorm over illegal lobbying.
Even though Guergis has been cleared by police, Harper's office said Wednesday she will not rejoin the Conservative caucus.
"The RCMP's decision will not affect Ms. Guergis' removal from cabinet or caucus," said Sara MacIntyre, a spokeswoman for the prime minister. "There were several factors that led to Ms. Guergis' removal from cabinet and caucus and the ethics commissioner is still conducting an investigation into her actions."
