I don't need a government that we give power at the ballot box and turn around and abdicate that power. I have not given that power.

We give power with our votes. The recipients of those votes then have the responsibility to exercise that power as we have given.

Ottawa shouldn’t play ‘the heavy’ with census data, Clement says

Industry Minister Tony Clement says the Harper government is tired of playing the villainous enforcer that coerces Canadians to relinquish personal information in a compulsory long-form census.

Opponents of the Conservative decision to scrap the mandatory long-form questionnaire are upset, the minister argues, because they enjoyed a free ride under the old system.

Previously, one fifth of Canadian households were required to fill out a 40-page census form that asked detailed questions about their home life, work and ethnicity – under threat of imprisonment or cash penalties.

The Tories have made this long-form census voluntary, despite the objections of provinces, doctors, educators, researchers and businesses that warn the change will erode the quality of data collected and hurt their ability to analyze and plan for the future.
