ST. JOHN’S, N.L.—Conservative leader Stephen Harper’s chief spokesman denies that he received any kickbacks for allegedly trying to influence the appointment process at the Montreal Port Authority.
Dimitri Soudas, Harper’s longtime aide and former Quebec advisor, was alleged in reports earlier this week of bullying the port authority in 2007 into choosing the federal government’s preferred candidate, Robert Abdallah, as its next chief executive.
Soudas lobbied was so strenuously on Abdallah’s behalf that two senior Conservative cabinet ministers had to intervene and diffuse the situation, the reports said.
On Thursday morning, several audio recordings appeared on YouTube purporting to be conversations between two businessmen prominent in the Quebec construction industry, Tony Accurso and Bernard Poulin.
