The Grewal tapes are doing their worst for Stephen Harper and are not laying a glove on Paul Martin. It is damaging that Grewal approached the Liberals first. They had no idea they were being taped and had every right to engage in their efforts at courting the Grewals.
Tim Murphy, Martin’s chief of staff, was only doing his job when approached by Grewal who offered the Liberals a sure way out of the non-confidence vote. Murphy would have been a prissy fool if he didn’t discuss with the Grewals some tentative plans or tentative awards for jumping. Ujjal Dosanjh was called in because he could speak with Grewal in Punjabi.
The Tories don’t look too good in the affair though they didn’t tell Grewal to secretly tape the conversation. They looked like they would do almost anything to get back at the Liberals.
Coming out as the story did in the midst of Deep Throat’s confession, the Grewal tapes put a Watergate spin on the Harper team it didn’t need. Harper became the patron saint of the Grewal tapes much as Nixon did with his secret tapes. Grewal has done secret tapings in earlier manifestations as a provincial Liberal in B.C. and seems to see nothing wrong in what he did.
