Now, tweens and teens from 12 to 14 years of age can hold down jobs in Alberta's restaurants without the previously required special permit from the provincial director of employment standards.
Alberta's labour movement has condemned the move, saying it is contrary to the interest of children.
The change comes as the province's service industry feels the pinch of a tight labour market. A spokeswoman for Alberta Human Resources and Employment says the only intent was to eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy.
"It's not a labour supply situation at all," Linda Park said. "These are permits that have been requested yearly and increasing and its a bit of red tape when you know you're going to sign them anyway." http://www.canada.com/edmonton/edmontonjournal/news/story.html?id=330f1e9a-f684-4cf8-af64-9bd3f57a9b7c&page=1 (only available for 7 days)
