Okay, what do you Easterners know about
Pine beetle and the Container truckers strike in B.C.

DON'T Google just yet...how much do you know offhand.

I ask because a radio host was bitching about a lack of Eastern news coverage on these two important issues.

1. I know about the Pine Bark Beetle and how it's destroying
trees. Is that what you're talking about. Don't know about the container truckers' strike, though.

3. Strike at port of Vancouver
Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 01:46 PM by democracy eh
truckers want increase in pay and increase in rates to cover fuel increases

costing millions and millions of dollars in trade and goods going bad (e.g. Australian wine) as containers are sitting in port, not moving. It will cause major headaches for all of Canada, not just BC as the Vancouver container port is the thoroughfare/bottleneck for most trade with China. The strike exacerbates the existing backlog of shipments at the port (hence the desire for facility expansion in Prince Rupert), demonstrates the risks of a 'just in time economy' and the shows the growing over reliance on container traffic due to the lack of investment in bulk carriers. Not only can imported goods not be unloaded from the containers, but Canadian goods can't be loaded into the empty crates for export.

Doesn't this bozo watch national news coverage?

we have plenty of beetle issues out in the East as well. hmmm I think there is also a container traffic connection to beetles. Bunny Watson

4. He claims
It was not reported on in Eastern Canada until the Business editor of the Toronto Star found out about it because she couldn't buy shoes that were held up on the docks.

Pine Beetle in BC is epidemic though, a natural disaster.

His complaint is lacklustre reporting across Canada.... so you saw it on the national?

Give me Vancouver traffic reports for an hour any day over that puffed-up irritant.

8. I don't understand this
Why is this myth kept going about easterners not knowing or caring what happens out west?

It's simply not true. News is nationwide, and we all know and are concerned.

Whose agenda is being helped by this myth anyway??
