Is CBC losing its quiet dignity?
I must admit the firey pictures, scary music and bold type reading "CRASH AT PEARSON" with the words shooting in one at a time, was kinda cheesy in a CNN way. I would expect more of a professional old school approach from CBC.

Also, we know the 401 is Canada's busiest highway, they don't have to keep repeating it.
You'd think they had built it or something.

1. Now, I must say....
...that before today I didn't even KNOW there was a 401, much less that it was Canada's busiest highway. But NOW maybe I can answer the question when it comes up on Canadian Trivial Pursuit....lol

I'm not familiar with that edition of the game, but I'll keep my eye out for it so I can also get that one question right! Welcome to DU by the way. :toast:

8. Thanks
In Texas, anymore, we don't hear much about Canada or anything else. We just have to keep hearing praises heaped on our crooked right-wing extremeist politicians!

And one Texas trivia.....George W. Bush was born in Connecticut...not Texas.

Dumbass little bastard that he is.

Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 01:46 PM by Logiola
if you buy a copy here it is more canadian based questions then american for history, politics.. and i believe they do have a straight Canadian edition.. it would be fun to put in a southern states pub and seeing a bunch of drunk texans trying to guess Canadian questions..

4. Well, I don't watch TeeVee anymore (except NHL playoffs). ;-)
As for the 401, I guess they don't repeat it too much on their site. :)

5. They probably know CNN et al. are taking their feed
I find that to be true about local stories here in the U.S. that are picked up nationally -- the anchors have to give more details for the out-of-towners ...

6. Story went worldwide
so coverage has to be for those outside the country as well.

Think of all those families in Europe with someone on board.

Infotainment has become all the thing, but CBC seems to have kept to the idea of 'just the news' fairly well in spite of the fad.

7. So, did you see that too?
I hope it was just and experiment. I think I'll write a letter anyway.

9. I get all my news
from the net...cuts down on the breathless 'golly gee whiz' crap and the wild speculation.

But by all means protest it...I don't want that kind of coverage here. Just the news...no hype.

10. The 401is not just Canada's busiest highway,
it's North America's busiest highway too.

Ontario provincial highway 401, The King's Highway 401, or the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway, which is normally referred to simply as Highway 401 (pronounced "Four-O-One"), is a freeway that extends across Southern Ontario, Canada. It is (by far) the longest 400-Series Highway in Ontario and one of the busiest highways in the world. Together with Quebec Autoroute 20, it is the road transportation backbone of the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor, containing over half of Canada's population.

<snip>

The 401 is widely considered to be North America's busiest highway, with an estimated Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) of over 425,000 in 2004, near the interchange with Highway 400. This surpasses the Santa Monica Freeway in Los Angeles, CA, and several Interstate freeways in Houston, TX. Due to its triple use as the main trade, commuting and recreational corridor in Ontario, the AADT rises to well beyond the 500,000 level on some days. The just-in-time inventory systems of the highly integrated auto industry in Michigan and Ontario have made the highway the busiest truck route in North America. The 401 also includes the continent's busiest multi-structure bridge at Hogg's Hollow in Toronto (four structures for the highway's four roadway beds).

The 401 is one of the most important highways in Canada, as it connects the populous Southern Ontario region with Quebec and Michigan, while also connecting to most other major highways in the province. The highway also serves as the principal connection to Montreal and points east, becoming Autoroute 20 at the Quebec border. The border crossing at Windsor and Detroit is the busiest trade crossing in the world, and although the 401 itself does not physically extend the last few kilometres into Detroit, it is the only route from Toronto to Windsor and on to Interstate 75. A future expansion of the Windsor-Detroit border crossing, which will include a freeway bypass of the existing Highway 3, may result in Highway 401 having a direct freeway link to the border. Some 40 percent of Canada-US trade travels the highway, which is one-third of Canada's foreign trade, and 4 percent of the all US foreign trade.

12. Well.
I think it's mostly because not much else of importance is happening in the country. On a slow news day, I won't worry if CBC overcovers one story.

13. Actually Typical CBC...
One can tell from the almost hallowed tones that the great words 'Toronto' and 'Highway 401' are spoken, that it's the good old CBC--at least Global mentioned that folks outside of the Great Lands might have air travel affected...

Good no one was killed though...they evacuated the plane's 305 people in 10 minutes--
Do they keep records on the fastest time;-)
