Canadian mayor to work from Hawai'i

This could be an important step in our efforts to join Confederation, ongoing intermittently since the 1880s, when Hawai'i was an independent kingdom butabout to be swallowed up by the USA. :-)

The mayor of Whistler, British Columbia, a ski resort town and key site for the 2010 Winter Olympics, says he needs a mid-life change from mountains and snow and will do his mayoral work at a distance.

"I'll be the mayor, but living in Hawaii and performing duties from there," said Mayor Hugh O'Reilly....

O'Reilly won't run for re-election in November. Instead, he'll complete the rest of this term, either telecommuting or commuting to council meetings from his new home in Hawaii, he said....

And the kicker:

O'Reilly, an American who moved to Canada at age 15, said he has no aspirations to run for political office in Hawaii.

There are some clear logistical issues here:

First, there is only one arena in Hawai'i that is large enough to hold a regulation 80'x200' ice surface for hockey, UH's Stan Sheriff Center. This, plus the lack of ski lifts to the tops of Mauna Kea and Haleakala, the only places where snow is found, could put a damper on plans to host the Winter Olympics.

Next, there is the matter of Timbits. We already have two similar pastries, malasadas and andagi. Three hole-free donut types would be the equivalent of de Gaulle's "350 different kinds of cheese".

Then again, how many of the residents of the new Whistler South riding are even aware that they have a choice of more than two political parties? (actually one, since the repukes are really an organized crime syndicate :-) )

And finally, does this imply that pakalolo :smoke: is now legal (or decriminalised)?
