US vice-president Cheney to attend Fraser Institute dinner in Calgary
When U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney visits Alberta in September, he will attend a fundraising dinner organized by right-wing think tank the Fraser Institute.

"It's a private dinner for a few friends of ours with the vice-president," said Michael Walker, executive director of the Fraser Institute. "It's by invitation-only."

Guests will pay $5,000-$10,000 a plate for the dinner, scheduled for Sept 8.

Alberta Premier Ralph Klein, B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell and former Ontario premier Mike Harris are expected to attend.

1. Foreign money?
Wait a second, is that legal? Is this an RNC event?
The Fraser Institute is receiving the money I guess? Not Cheney or the RNC?

Sure glad that crash cart cheney has time to go to fundraisers in Canada. :eyes:

Funding
In 2003 Fraser Institute income was $6,620,038. In its annual report it discloses that 52% was from unspecified foundations, 38% from unspecified "organizations" (presumably corporations) and only 10% from individuals.

"During the year, the Institute approached prospective donors to support over 50 specific projects including student seminars, teachers’ workshops, the elementary and secondary school report cards, environmental studies, aboriginal studies, globalization studies, global warming and the Kyoto Protocol, fiscal studies, economic freedom, managing risk and regulation, pharmaceutical and health care studies, CANSTATS, and democratic reform," it states in its 2003 annual report. <1> (http://www.fraserinstitute.ca/pdf/annualreports/AR-03.pdf)

While ExxonMobil discloses in it annual statements that it contributed $60,000 to the organisation to work on "Climate Change", the Fraser Institute does not explicitly disclose the contribution. <2> (http://www.exxonmobil.com/Corporate/files/corporate/giving_report.pdf)

According to Media Transparency between 1985 and 2003 the Fraser Institute has received 30 grants totalling $ 403,301 (unindexed for inflation) from the following U.S. foundations:

Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation
Sarah Scaife Foundation
Charles G. Koch Family Foundation
Claude R. Lambe Charitable Foundation
John M. Olin Foundation
Carthage Foundation <3> (http://www.mediatransparency.org/recipientgrants.php?recipientID=125)

5. Holy crap! The Scaife Foundation!
I knew they were bad but being funded by the Scaife Foundation puts them on a whole new level of slime.

Thanks, CHIMO, for the info, it is very enlightening.

3. I suspect there will be a 'welcome' suitable for him
outside of the place where the dinner is being held once that location is revealed. The Fraser Institute must be getting desperate now that their icon, Harper, is no longer popular even within their own crowd so they have to bring in Cheney, rofl.

like it is"

Just like they did when chimpo visited. Wow-- what a difference
compared to our media shills.

No sugar-coating of that scum Cheney--not like in the States.

10. You're kidding, right?
This is freaking Alberta! The main papers here are so far right. The Grope & Flail might take a shot at him, as well as the Toronto Star, but that's pretty much it. And with the CBC on strike, who knows what they will do.

visited and they were anything but complimentary.

But you can't tell me that your media are owned by neocons?
That everything liberal is suppressed??

I thought Canada was, comparatively speaking, liberal.
Didn't you guys recently legalize gay marriage??

Your government isn't Fascist-- sadly, ours is.

Just my impression from south of your border.

7. if they are as firm believers in privatization as they claim ...
... they should tell Cheney to bring along his wallet. I'm sure he can well afford to shell out $30 for a scotch, $18.50 for a plate of appys, etc.

12. Here's some good news
Bill Clinton is coming to Calgary in October. Compared to Cheney's soiree, this is a bargain at $395.

13. Dick Cheney has a drunk driving record, two convictions
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 11:55 PM by IntravenousDemilo
Where he's from, drunk driving apparently isn't such a big deal, but here in Canada it's a felony. All Americans with a record of drunk driving or any other felony must apply in writing to Canadian authorities and request permission to enter the country, and provide fingerprints to the RCMP as well as copies of their conviction records, just as people convicted of marijuana possession must register with the FBI should they want to enter the United States.

If Mr Cheney doesn't want to go through the several weeks it takes the bureaucratic wheels to turn, he should not be allowed into the country, since for legal purposes he is considered to be an undesirable alien.

Diplomatic immunity? Maybe for something he does while he was in office, surely not for a crime he committed (twice) as a private citizen.

And I'm not surprised at all that Ralph Klein (drunk homeless abuser), Gordon Campbell (drunk driver) and Mike Harris (drunk driver/wife beater) will be in attendance.

BTW, I hate the oxymoronic term "right-wing think tank" -- "right wing" and "think" in the same phrase? It is to laugh.
