1. Do you mean "any Americans"
Well anyway, I came to the US from Canada about 7 years ago. Over the last 4 years I have seriously thought about moving back several times, especially after the 2004 election theft. But I'm still here for now.

I wouldn't blame you one bit if you moved back!!

3. I'll probably get flamed for this, but...

Even as a Canadian, prior to the the '04 US election, I warned folks on this very board to "beware the Alec Baldwin syndrome" as it may come back to bite them in the ass.

That said tho, you might find it interesting to note that I personally know plenty of Americans (none DUer's) who are in Vancouver/Gulf Islands/Vancouver Island via the "back door", ie. tele/cyber commuting, vacation property, student visas, or just plain working "under the table". This is especially prevalent in the film biz (in which I work), and in the tourism industry, esp. ski resorts and the enviro-tourism sector, where one can work as a "heli-skiing guide", for example, as this would not only be "under the table", but requires a very unique "skill set". (Aussies are very big on this...)

"Moneyed" Hong Kong Chinese have been doing similar for decades (though not for the above reasons but, rather, entrepreneurial/small business's, the "new" China, etc.).

Virtually NONE of this shows up on any immigration stats until years after the fact (ie. taking it slow, having children here, then applying for status, etc...).

I'm not sure why you asked your question in the first place, but if you're wondering why you're not getting a huge American response to this thread, it could be because of the above, or: the "Alec Baldwin" thing.

Cheers.

5. Just curious: exactly what "ploy" are you referring to?
Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 11:50 PM by nine23
I'm not sure if you directed your post at the original poster, or my response to it...either way, I could personally care less. I'm actually inclined to agree with you re: "stay in the country (you) love" (for my own reasons).

Regardless, even before GWB existed, people have been known to move around the planet a bit, esp. if one is young, single, has a few bucks in their pocket, etc. Not a big deal (at least for me and most of the people I know). I also notice you're rather new here (or at least haven't made that many posts); this was an enormous issue here for some Americans last fall.

Is there something about the original poster we should know? You sound awfully pissed...

... before giving out obnoxious advice.

This here -- where you were when you wrote your post -- is the "Canada Forum". It's mainly frequented by Canadians. The subject matter is, broadly, Canada.

It is therefore a reasonable point -- for Canadians -- to be curious about: whether there are USAmericans at DU who have moved to Canada. If there are, they might be expected to be reading posts in the Canada Forum. Which might be why the post was posted in the Canada Forum.

I would assume that once the poster learned whether there were USAmericans in Canada hereabouts, she might want to ask them some questions, out of curiosity: what do you think of our political parties? our health care system? our foreign policy? ...

Curiosity, particularly about other people, really is a natural and quite valuable human attribute, rare as it might be to find it south of that border.

edit: my confusion this time. I see ailsagirl around and got it into my head just now that she was Canadian. ;) (I think partly because of her name, which keeps making me mean to say "Are you from Ailsa Craig?")

Nonetheless, I guess she's curious about something about USAmericans who have moved to Canada -- maybe different things from what a Canadian might be curious about -- and figured that here was where she might find some. I'm not seeing grounds for lambasting, still.

This was supposed to be in reply to that rather odious
poster who jumped all over me for posting my original
question.

His/her post has been deleted.
:)

ANyway, all, thanks for your comments.

9. LOL, It was your president that took his time reading
'My Pet Goat' and seems to find joy in playing childish games while soldiers die.

I am interested in knowing why an honest question in the appropriate forum would generate a response that really has no relevance to the question and delivered in such a snarky way.

Proud to be an American, but I love Canada too.

What exactly is your question?

7. Moved to Toronto in 2002
For a variety of reasons, I'll still vote, but I don't plan on returning. It's not just about Bush - Clinton was too conservative for me. Many, here and in the general population, would have you believe that the U.S. is about peace, freedom, equality and tolerance but from my point of view it is not, and never really has been - not under Bush II, not under Clinton, not under Bush I, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, LBJ, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Truman, FDR, and on and on.

14. Canadians in California here - moving back...
Been in the Bay Area for the last 10 years... Met with a realtor over the weekend and our house is going up for sale in a few weeks...

As a Gay couple, we got fed up with having to fight the same battles over and over again.... The right wing is working on THREE propositions next year trying to TAKE AWAY domestic partner rights here in California...

It's really sad, because the US is losing ALOT of talented people... I know at least 5 other Gay couples here in the Bay Area trying to move to Canada... It's taking them longer since they're American, but I have no doubt they're leaving...

We're moving to Toronto in the spring...

16. We are keeping a very close eye on the developments here.
But we want to have children and raise them in a healthy environment. We both still have both parents living, so we don't want to go as far as Europe... unless we win the lottery suddenly. But, we are keeping an open mind towards Canada and have started doing the basic research on moving. I can easily find a teaching position and Mr. kt's company isglobal, and transferring isn't too difficult. It will be after 2008 before we actually make the move... unless something terrible and unforseen happends. With this crowd in office, you never can tell, now can you?

18. Yes and No..........
I moved here in 1959, (I know,Old Codger)and I just love this place,people,attitude,climate,political system,friendliness,snow.

I have changed my citizenship to match my philosophy and have never regretted it for a minute. It was like 'coming home'. There are just no words to explain how 'nice' this country is.
I 'left' a huge (or is that hugh, for the 'Southern relations'), Family and now have to be 'blackmailed or bribed' into returning for weddings or funerals. I have such a lovely big extended (friends and) family up here, I don't even think about them (USAians) most of the time, though I do stay in touch. I also send posts from DU just to remind them, of the saner parts of the planet, but with no malice. Hopefully, I use Humour to underscore the differences not the divisions.

I do know that this country is not perfect, 'PM the PM' needs to get a backbone or maybe a 'bone' of some sort. the parlimentry system means that 4 day a week, except when in recess (like now) our leader has to stand up before the cameras and public and explain 'WTF were you thinking'. Wouldn't you like to see bush do that?
Just my view from the 'top of the world' You should come for a visit, we'd love to see you. Meet for coffee at Timmys.

My wife and I moved to Nova Scotia from Colorado in 1990--hard at first with the economy in the toilet and general adjustment, but after fifteen years we're HOME!

23. I would love to move to Canada
But because of my husband's age and health problems, I doubt we'd have a chance of getting in the door.

There is a macabre benefit to living in the U.S. right now. I truly have a sense of living at a momentous time in history. As I said to my husband the other day, "How often does one get the chance to watch a great nation die, inch by inch?"

24. Yes -- we moved last month
My partner and I moved from NYC at the end of August. We are renting a house in Port Credit and we love it.

We first talked about it in July 2003 and applied early 2004.

There is a link to her blog -- with lots of info if you are thinking about moving -- in my sig.

(Also glad to finally look for and find the Canada section of DU.)

I am working at it very very hard right now. In the midst of a jumble of paperwork. But it's looking good and I have never been so happy in my life! And I look forward to reading your blog.

ps. Another vote for Sleemans!
