In the absence of any sort of daily news coverage of northern BC or
Canada, can any one doubt the value of a publicly funded national radio
broadcaster?
Most of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s employees have been
locked out since August 15. As a newsperson, I tend to be critical of
CBC’s local programming; but it is increasingly clear that it is
important to have independent media. It’s vital for any country.
While researchers at the Fraser Institute are publishing studies about
the CBC’s negative coverage of the war in Iraq and a supposed
anti-American slant, Americans themselves are finally realizing just
how deeply they have been screwed by their own news agencies.
According to the host of Democracy Now! Amy Goodman, the day before the
second war in Iraq began on February 15, 2003, fully 30 million people
around the world marched in protest. “Of the four major nightly
newscasts, and that's CBS, NBC, ABC, and PBS, there were 393 interviews
done around war. Only three were with anti-war representatives,” said
Goodman .
Michael Ryan of the Houston Chronicle had this to say in a recent
editorial about the coverage:
