3. I shall see if it takes off with the commuters...
Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 06:26 AM by Thankfully_in_Britai
...at the local train station. Most of them go for the compact Times so if the local commuters on their way to Liverpool Street of a morning can start reading the Grauniad then I might be a little hopeful. Call me what you will but I'm not a big fan of the Times and it might be interesting to see that lot taking to the Guardian, which I hardly ever see being read on the way to work of a morning.

And as for me? I think I'll stick with whatever books I have on loan from the library.

4. But they could already buy the Independent
so I wouldn't hold your breath, if I were you. I doubt they read The Times just because of its size.

5. You do see more copies of the Independent being read
So I do think that size does matter a little bit. Otherwise a lot of the Times crowd might read the Telegraph instead. As it is the Torygraph and the FT seem to be read mostly by the commuters in the 1st class compartment. And whilst some commuters do read the Independent or the Mirror the Guardian is a worryingly rare sight on the 07:49 to Liverpool Street.

But yes, the most popular papers with the commuter crowd do seem to be the Times and the Dail Mail. Not to mention the London Evening Standard on the way home.

7. Nah, I like newspapers to look like newpapers.
but then I don't have to read them on a train.

15. Freedom Fries? Why do you hate the UK?
They hate us for our chips. And black pudding. They have no black pudding of their own and they envy us. Are you some kind of pinko?

18. Ha ha - they hate us for our boiled cabbage, too -
except the Russians and Chinese, who seem to have more boiled cabbage than anyone.

8. I'm worried they're going to mess up the typeface and design.
I like the new size, but I really liked the way the Guardian used to look; it was the best-designed newspaper and it would be so easy to wreck that.

And I thinl that it's a crime that they're scrapping Pass Notes.

11. Had a chance to see the dummy run in today's issue?
It looks nice but rather magazine-y. As I suggested above, I guess I was expecting more of a Le Monde with colour pix.

I'll reserve my judgement for the real thing.

19. It looks a lot like the Saturday Review section, across the whole paper.
There's a lot to like about it. Clean, legible, smart. I love the Berliner format.

Cons for me:

I miss the old masthead. (The new one could be a lot worse, I suppose, but I worry it will age badly.)

A bigger flannel panel is BAD NEWS.

The headline typeface seems a bit weedy; I hope they have a stronger setting for BIG stories.

Unanswered questions:

Paper stock; is it going to be on that white stock that the dummy was on, like Le Monde Diplomatique?

Weight; how much thicker will it be?

Preliminary conclusion: I was a big fan of the old design and very wary of this change. It is better than I pessimistically expected. However, it is in execution that we will see the flaws and successes.

12. I've had a look at what's in today's Guardian
& I'm kinda swinging around to it, probably becasue it's going to be full colour.

I think the new logo fits in well with the rest of the design

16. I'm sure you'll adjust
Every time they change something, people complain at first. The 1988 redesign (was it really that long ago? Wow) caused a lot of grumbling at the time.
