More Gurkhas can settle in the UK
New rules for former Gurkha soldiers will allow around 4,300 more to live in the UK, the Home Office has said.

In September 2008, the High Court ruled that immigration rules denying Gurkhas who retired before 1997 an automatic right to stay in the UK were unlawful.

Ex-Gurkha Dhan Gurung said he wanted "justice in the name of those who fought and died for this country".

Immigration Minister Phil Woolas said new rules would "improve the situation" but "we have to go through each case".

Quite right.

2. Fury over Gurkha settlement plan
Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 05:56 AM by dipsydoodle
Campaigners have reacted with anger to new rules on the eligibility of Gurkha veterans to live in the UK.

The Home Office said that new rules would allow about 4,300 more to settle, but the Gurkha Justice Campaign said it would be just 100.

Actress Joanna Lumley, a campaigner for the Gurkhas, said the announcement made her "ashamed of our administration".

Mind you, one of the better things about Facebook is that there are groups for most political issues. It's not just for people who think Jeremy Clarkson should be prime minister.

I had hoped they were getting a fair deal but the small print was pretty unencouraging.
