Afghanistan troops 'will get whatever they need'
Oh, silly me, they only said this in October 2006 - it obviously takes 3 years to do anything in a war:

...
However, in the interview broadcast today to mark the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan by a US-led alliance, he said: “It is right that it has been very, very tough, it was always going to be tough.

“I think in some senses whenever you go into a battlefield situation like that there are always things that you learn, there are always things that come at you in a more intense way than you expect.”

He attacked critics for misquoting Mr Reid, saying that he had only hoped that no shots would be fired, but had admitted it was going to be extremely dangerous. There have been numerous reports saying that soldiers lives are being put at risk because of inappropriate or insufficient equipment.

However, the Prime Minister said: “If the commanders on the ground want more equipment — armoured vehicles for example, more helicopters — that will be provided. Whatever package they want, we will do.”

1. Obviously I understand the political consequences
of withdrawal, but I do keep asking, what are we doing there, what is the mission?

"what are we doing there, what is the mission?"

To answer this question you need only look at a map to see what a prime location for exerting control in the region it is. Look at the neighbourhood.

There is also the small matter of a proposed oil pipeline of course that might allow China to get oil in a way that nullifies the allies supremacy at sea.

And lastly consider what the main crop is.

Of course its forbidden to spell it all out so the public must be told that numerous young Britons must die in order that Afghanistan can be free and young girls can get an education.
