Poll boost for PM as confidence in economy grows
"Labour's hopes of avoiding a general election rout at the hands of David Cameron's Tories will be boosted today as a new poll shows a sharp fall in the Conservatives' lead, raising the possibility of a hung parliament.

The Ipsos MORI survey for the Observer, which will cause alarm in Tory ranks and boost Labour's hope of performing a "great escape", puts the Conservatives on 37%, only six points ahead of Labour on 31%. The Liberal Democrats are on 17%.

It is the narrowest gap between the two main parties in any poll since last December and demonstrates that, rather than powering towards a landslide victory, Cameron's party is struggling to capture the number of floating voters it needs to win a decisive mandate."

This would be the greatest comeback since Lazarus.

1. Find myself musing on what might happen if health problems ...
... necessitated Brown's withdrawal from politics early next year ...

2. I don't think David Miliband would be more popular than Brown.
I doubt that even Alan Johnson would really turn the party's fortunes round dramatically.

And who else is there?

3. I wonder how much it matters. There's clearly no great enthusiasm for the Cameroons ...
... so a fresh face would at least be an alternative to their policy of Rook Everyone But The Filthy Rich Like Us.

4. I'm still amazed that there are still so many Britons daft enough to vote Labour or Tory...
Kind of pathetic when you think about it. At least the Scottish are on to something with the SNP and the Greens.

5. Call me what you will here...

but I couldn't help but think that much of the story in yesterday's Observer was wishful thinking on their part.

It all culminated in Andrew Rawnsley speculating about Gordon Brown being replaced by David Miliband or Alan Johnson as part of a deal to form a coalition with the Lib Dems. What about Labour party members choosing their own leader rather then Nick Clegg? They could have done with a choice in 2007 on that one.
