British people 'feel less of a duty to vote at elections'

The number of people who feel a pressing need to vote in general elections is declining, according to a government-backed survey.

British Social Attitudes suggests 56% of people think it is "everyone's duty to vote" - down from 68% in 1991.

More people see themselves as Tory, rather than Labour, supporters for the first time since the 1980s, it adds.

The survey, of 4,486 adults, also suggests attitudes to homosexuality are becoming more liberal. But the data, collected during 2008, points towards a toughening of views on keeping the sale of cannabis illegal.

3. I live in a safe Labour seat, so it doesn't matter so much if I vote

Although I still do it. I'm not a fan of FPTP but that issue has had many threads here.
