Goldie Hawn talks to UK Conservatives about setting up schools in Britain
Source: BBC

The Tories are in talks with foreign educational groups - including one run by Hollywood actress Goldie Hawn - to set up state schools in Britain.

Shadow Education Secretary Michael Gove says he is talking to the French government and a Swedish schools chain. And he told The Sunday Times his team had also spoken to Ms Hawn's charity, which promotes Buddhist values.

The Tories want parents, charities and companies to take over failing schools or set up new ones if they win power.

Mr Gove said his team had also recently met actress Goldie Hawn, whose Hawn Foundation charity runs schools in America and Canada and is said to be keen to open a school in the UK. The Hawn Foundation teaches the Buddhist technique of Mindfulness training, which emphasises social and emotional progress over academic testing and the use of simple breathing exercises to boost learning power.

1. I dunno
If it's conservatives Goldie is talkin to, all they can do is set up things that fall down...like ECONOMIES...apologies for shouting...I get that way sometimes (when I think of mindless Republicans/Conservatives)

3. 'Swedish-style schools won't work'
Evidence from Sweden suggests that a new generation of independent state schools planned by the Conservatives would be socially divisive and would not improve standards, Schools Secretary Ed Balls has claimed.

Mr Balls quoted the head of Sweden's school inspectors, Per Thulberg, who said the competition introduced into the education system by the new-style schools had not produced better results.

Mr Thulberg, who heads Sweden's equivalent of Ofsted, the National Agency for Education, told BBC Two's Newsnight that the schools achieved better standards because of the background of their students, who largely come from well-educated families.

Shadow schools secretary Michael Gove is proposing to allow parents' groups, charities, trusts and voluntary groups to set up and operate schools on the Swedish model, which would be taxpayer-funded and non-fee-paying but independent from state control.

But it fits Gove's ideology, so he wants it. I think Gove is one of the most dangerous Tories - he has some fairly radical right wing views.
