Brown to quit tonight. Dave PM tomorrow - Evening Standard
Gordon Brown is set to resign tonight and allow David Cameron to be Britain's new Prime Minister.

The Labour leader's final desperate attempt to cling on to power with a Lib-Lab deal crumbled amid a rebellion on his own side and policy disagreements with Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.

This afternoon he retreated to No 10 to discuss his situation with senior ministers, friends and wife Sarah.

1. Fucking hell.
At least the Tories won't have the power to plunge us all headlong into destruction like they did under Thatcher; but it is still most depressing.

6. Brown has resigned, and Clegg is now left in the lurch.
Cameron will be PM shortly as Brown has left for Buck Palace.

10. Precedent
That's interesting. The idea of "deputy" prime minister is fairly recent so there's no precedent for a the position deputy in a coalition.

I do hope the Lib Dems haven't fallen for this, it may well spell disaster for the party. Say what you will about the Lib Dems but I'm convinced that three well supported parties is better than just two.

12. Note quite true - Attlee was Deputy PM in the WW2 coalition

Though a wartime coalition is a bit of a special case, admittedly.
