Tories and Lib Dems fight Tory and Lib Dem cuts in Tory heartland

Couldn't supress a smile at this gem from the local rag in my old East Midlands stomping ground.

The thought of the local MP - who just happens to be the Tory's ex- Shadow Attorney General - battling with the local Lib Dems against the ConDem Justice Department's dastardly deeds has got to win this week's Chutzpah award.

"But when you talked about Public Sector cuts, Mr. Garnier, we thought you meant those shiftless oiks Up North ..."

Priceless.

1. Similar story in Sheffield
The government has cancelled a loan to Sheffield Forgemasters, but the council is Lib Dem controlled and opposing this, which puts them at odds with a certain Lib Dem MP for Sheffield Hallam who has not been doing enough to stop the Tories treating Sheffield with their usual spite.

The thing is, people did think that having Nick Clegg as deputy PM might have meant that Sheffield was a bit better protected from the spending cuts.

2. The LibDems are on the verge of turning into the old National Liberals

(the ones who colluded with Churchill in 1951. Remember them?)

It would not surprise me to see a split in that party sometime in the next couple of years.

5. In the meantime...
I fully expect the Lib Dems to lose Sheffield Council to Labour. I can't see the Lib Dems being exactly rewarded by the electorate in places like Sheffield for backing Osbourne's cuts.

The trouble here is that the Labour party in Sheffield are total rubbish, especially when it comes to spending public money wisely.

6. Isn't that true everywhere?
Labour spends every dollar they get their hands on in Iraq. I hope the SNP use the wars as a bullyclub against the union when they get their referendum.

7. Not on local councils it isn't

In the case of Sheffield Council the local Labour party loves nothing better then spending money on white elephant projects, building rubbish nobody really needs. The classic example of this was the 1991 World Student Games.

3. I think (hope) that once the cuts really start to bite there will be squabbling and rebellions
Many LibDems aren't too keen on the coalition deal now; when they suffer big Council losses next year, I suspect a lot will actively rebel and the coalition will collapse. And/or if the Tories go back on having a referendum on PR, or if PR is defeated in such a referendum. This was one of the main motivations for many of the LibDems who agreed to join (at least those who were not made Ministers as part of the deal!)

Even some Tories may rebel on some of the cuts if pressed sufficiently by local 'NIMBY's about them.

If Labour can sort out their own party infighting in time, this may lead to their getting back in next time! Or not. We can but hope!

4. Meanwhile, up here, the LibDem Tory coalition who run Northumberland ...

... are agonizing over how they can implement the cuts imposed upon them by the Tory LibDem coalition who run Whitehall.

Never mind, Council Tax will be frozen so we won't be paying any extra for the services they can no longer provide ....
