Why "Protestant" instead of "fundamentalist" when discussing the situation in Northern Ireland?
Edited on Sat Jul-31-10 11:18 AM by BolivarianHero
It seems offensive to decent Protestant folk from mainstream denominations (particularly Anglicans, due to the misconception that mainline Anglicanism predominates Unionism rather than the fundamentalist Free "Presbyterian" hate cult) to be lumped with Paisley and his followers. They have more in common with pro-slavery evangelical sects in the USA than with mainstream Protestant Christianity.

Normalizing these extremists plays right into the hands of their propaganda machine.

1. Although the DUP was founded by Ian Paisley and has close ties
with the Free Presbyterian Church most of its voters belong to different Protestant denominations. I am not sure that political Unionism and religious fundamentalism are quite as synonymous as you imagine although it is true that the Free Presbyterians have grown in influence and numbers over recent decades.
