Labour fails to gain ground in poll

David Cameron has received a boost with a poll suggesting Labour had not gained ground following Ed Miliband's anointment as leader.

As activists gathered for the Tory conference in Birmingham, research by ComRes for the Independent newspaper found the party had marginally extended its advantage since the middle of last month.

The Conservatives were up two points on 39%, while Labour's rating went up one to 36%. The Liberal Democrats were unchanged on 15%.

ComRes telephoned 2,035 adults online between September 29 and October 1. The data was weighted by past vote recall.

1. At least they've improved quite a bit on their election day performance

One interesting fact that I just discovered is that the Tories got *exactly the same* percentage of the vote this year as in 1945! The difference is that far more of the non-Tory vote was split between Labour and smaller parties - notably the LibDems, but also the nationalist parties.

Interesting that Labour do not appear to be suffering for the financial crisis that this government is trying to sort out. Whether they are going about it the right way or not I cannot see the percentages being anything like those you see now in a years time when all the cuts and job losses start to kick in.

Means very little four years from election time.

4. It means quite a lot for next years County Council elections

where the Liberal Democrats are going to get massacred. But then Clegg will not give a damn as it is clear that like Lloyd George in the 1920s he has sold out his party for his own career. Sadly unlike Lloyd George Clegg will not have any achievements from earlier in his political life on which to look back.

In fact I would like to go on record now with the following predictions about the future of electoral reform next year which is the last fig leaf covering the Lib Dems wilting reputation. One, the Constituency boundary changes and reductions in number of MPS will go through which will help the Tories going forward. Two, changes to the voting system will be rejected in the constitutional referendum. When the latter happens the Lib Dem activists will wake up and find they have been royally screwed by the Coalition

Locally, the Lib Dem leaders of the Newcastle and Northumberland authorities are currently publicly shitting massive quantities of bricks in advance of next year's Massacre of the Not-So-Innocents.
