To stimulate Tourism, right, Dave? And nothing to do with the far-right's long-running fetish with "National Days" and "English Identity".

As Auntie Bella used to say, "You must think we're as stupid as you look".

1. Apparrently the lame argument is that it will boost the 'tourist industry'
Quite why people would be any keener to brave the leaden skies and biting easterly wind of many a St Georges day is beyond me. Indeed the logic of moving back the May Day holiday 7 days so that is certain to collide with Easter is simply barking. The alternative offered of tourists flocking to enjoy the rain and equinoxial gales of a typical Trafalgar day on 21st October is equally bizarre. If they want to move the holiday why not opt for a date like midsummer on 21 June when at least the sun has chance of shining with some warmth and we actually get a lot of daylight for people to enjoy their leisure activities. Proof positive (if any was needed) that this government has not got a f*cking clue.

2. Speaking as a Morris dancer, the hell with this.
I've been getting up before dawn and going out dancing on May 1st to make sure the sun comes up for years, now.

If they follow through with this, I'll stop doing it, and plunge the world into a year-long night.

You have been warned.
