Irish music in flight
The National Youth Orchestra of Ireland were on tour in the UAE last week. On the way home, they started an impromptu Irish Music Seisiún onboard the Etihad Airways flight!!

3. Ah.
It´s Black Books; Tamsin Greig gives her version of an Irish folk song, then they have a dancing contest. Genius.

I´ll risk the wrath of the world and admit I hate Irish music. Not the Irish, just the music.

4. Ireland has a great musical traditon that sadly too often descends into 'Diddly Oi' cliches
To be honest most of this debasement occurs because foreigners tend to prefer the parody of a culture to the real thing. It is a problem which also impacts Britain where visitors often never go beyond places like London, Stratford on Avon and Oxford. Of course, the Irish tourist board must carry some of the blame for shamelessly playing up the image. Many Irish people find it all a bit embarrassing as was beautifully displayed in Terry Wogans recent documentary tour of Ireland where his local driver could not help curling his lip in distaste at the very idea of visiting a 'singing pub'.

5. I agree with your post...
...but (you knew that was coming) still don´t like the music. Just personal taste. On the video we see talented young musicians playing with vigour. It just doesnt appeal to my ear.

But you are right. Irish music has been commercialised and reduced to it´s lowest common denominator which takes any freshness nd passion out of it. Only good for a tourist commercial. As the best musician I ever played with said about Dizzy Miss Lizzy; "It´s rock and roll by numbers. All the right elements but still sh§t!".

In terms of cliches, "anglo-american" music suffers the same horrible fate here in Germany. 95% of the singers and groups I see on the Reeperbahn sing the same tired set list because it´s what the punters expect. And listening to the radio you´d think it was 1986. You´ve got something like a 30% chance of switching on to Nick Kershaw...
