But the Torygraph says...
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8642786/Phone-hacking-New-body-blows-for-Rupert-Murdoch.html

Oh, it's hard to believe that even the Torygraph has joined the vultures. Where will it end?

3. Being long enough in the tooth to remember the Mirror pre-Maxwell and pre-Morgan ...
... there are a lot of papers to which I'd ascribe the epithet "The Moron" before that one.

5. I know that. Oldironside
I was 18 around when their first issue came out in '61.

I got into trouble 5 years ago on DU years ago when I used the title of one of Willy Rushton's old cartoons. I was called a racist fuck amongst other things. Problem is if I tell you what it was a google search will still take you to it instantly.

Most if not all of the old covers are in their archive : http://www.private-eye.co.uk/covers.php?showme=693

Enjoy !

:hi:

6. Though the Eye has Done The State Some Service over the years ...
Edited on Sun Jul-17-11 06:10 AM by non sociopath skin
.... it hasn't always been on the side of the angels.

Their attitude to gay men, in particular, has often been very dodgy.

Don't remember that "Moron" epithet at all. A senior moment of selective amnesia, perhaps?

8. It takes me back.
I remember reading the 10th anniversary issue of Gay News what seems like several lifetimes ago now (1982 according to Wikipedia, and it wasn't mine - honest!) where they had a series of cartoons satirising the rest of the press and their attitudes to gay rights.

Private Eye was morphed into Public School ("Can't stand sacred cows... by the way, did you hear the one about the woofter with piles...?).

The others I recall (it did make me laugh, so it stayed with me) were The Deadly Epitaph, The S'Fun (Page 3 - Lesbo Lovelies - two for the price of one!), the Concerned Liberal, and the Sunday Wristjob (now, sadly, defunct)

9. The Torygraph also says the BBC is pursuing this for revenge
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/janetdaley/8642161/Phone-hacking-The-BBC-Left-is-using-hacking-to-get-revenge.html

Of course, if you examine the column carefully, you find Daley hasn't actual instance of the BBC saying something wrong; she just thinks there is an "odour of vengeance" in what the 'soft-Left orthodoxy' says about the hacking, so there must be at the BBC too. But that doesn't stop her whining on for several paragraphs about how awful the BBC is.

10. I find the comments underneath...
... just as interesting. The initial batch of comments after publication were from people who really believe that there is a Zionist-Marxist conspiracy to enslave white Europeans. The latest batch seem more balanced, thankfully.

11. There are some VERY bizarre commentators at the Torygraph
They range from explicit BNP supporters to those with a paranoid obsession with the EU as the cause of all evil to people who appear to be American tea party members/supporters. Weird and often racist/antisemitic CTs are common.

There are also a fair number of brave souls who challenge all the insanity.

12. I suppose that...
... even paranoid lunatics have the right to be heard, too. Of course, they have to be challenged, too.

This is a still from Red Dwarf. As Lister said at the time: "Ignore him! He's a total nutter! Hands up if you've only got one testicle!"

13. Well, according to my favourite person Melanie Phillips:
'If Miliband is such a hero, why won't he tackle the REAL threat to our way of life - the BBC?'

From the Hate-Mail of course.

'No, Murdoch’s real crime in the eyes of the Left-wing intelligentsia is simply that he has stood in the way of their total capture of the culture.

The dominance of Left-wing ideas has been such that even among so-called conservatives, many of them have become accepted as mainstream. And one of the most powerful architects of that shift has been the BBC.

.

(According to the BBC, in Mel's view): For example, traditional Christians are all fundamentalist bigots; the science of man-made global warming is settled; opponents of mass immigration are racist; Eurosceptics are swivel-eyed fanatics; and all who oppose these opinions and more are Right-wing extremists.

... But the media monopoly that really has undermined and demoralised British society and deserves to be broken up is the BBC.'

She is getting to sound more and more like a parody of herself. Unfortunately there are people who take her seriously.

14. Poll: everything more popular than Daily Mail (including the BBC)
Lord Ashcroft did some polling on public attitudes on various subjects as part of his “Project Blueprint” research for the Tories. Some of the results deserve a wider audience, as every single one of the following is the exact opposite of what many opinion formers in the Westminster Bubble claim that “the people” think:

When asked whether they regarded various things as “positive or negative aspects of Britain today”, the Daily Mail came out bottom, viewed less positively than “membership of the European Union”, “the TUC”, “ethnic and religious diversity”, “civil partnerships for gay couples” and “the BBC”. The NHS was viewed most positively, then the BBC, then the Royal Family.
...
You can read the full results here.
