Riots in Tottenham after shooting protest
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-14434318

Petrol bombs have been thrown at police and three patrol cars, and a bus and buildings have been set on fire in a riot in Tottenham, north London.

Eight injured police officers have been taken to hospital, at least one of them with head injuries. Shops in the area have also been looted with people seen pushing away shopping trolleys full of goods. A double-decker bus was set on fire at the junction of High Road and Brook Street while a shop on the High Road was also set alight.

The unrest began after a protest over the fatal shooting by police of 29-year-old Mark Duggan on Thursday. The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the shooting of Mr Duggan.

A police officer was also injured in the incident, which happened when police stopped a minicab containing Mr Duggan. It is thought the officer, who was taken to hospital and later discharged, was shot first but this is not known for certain, an IPCC spokesman said. The Met said a handgun was found at the scene and a bullet was later found embedded in a police radio.

1. Know the area well. My late wife's family lived there.
This is very sad. Anyone on the ground got more information?

I've been reading the comments on the Guardian which are quite polarised - Tories=riots v mindless violence.

Worth remembering there are always opportunists on the side lines, some from quite afar, waiting for a nights looting as was the case last night in both Tottenham and Wood Green.

Hopefully they'll all get 2 weeks basic and then straight off to Helmand.

Meanwhile the looters have moved off to Ponders End with reports of car jackings and cars being set on fire and police are already out in riot gear in Edmunton.

5. I picked up on one of the twitter feeds last night
that some of the looters had needed to ask local people to direct them to the streets where the bank and stores were located. So much for the looters being locals themselves.

What did amuse was the tv coverage from Enfield showing the police keeping some of the looters banged up inside the HSBC Bank they'd broken into. Say hello to charges of "aggravated burglary" at the very least.

6. London riots: Violence erupts for third day
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-14450248

Riot police have again been deployed to the streets of London as violence broke out for a third day running. Police have clashed with rioters in Hackney and vehicles have been set on fire in Peckham and Lewisham.

A BBC journalist said the latest violence started in Mare Street, Hackney, when a man was stopped and searched by police but nothing was found.

Groups of people began attacking the police at about 16:20 BST, throwing rocks and a bin at officers. Police cars were also being smashed by youths, who were armed with wooden poles and metal bars. Looters also smashed their way into shops, including a JD Sports store, before police lines dispersed the group. Planks of wood taken from a lorry were then hurled towards riot officers. Trains are not stopping at Hackney Central and buses are being diverted from the area.

Violence has also broken out in Peckham, south London, where a bus has been set on fire Peckham High Street.

7. Good to see the police are going for aggravated burglary
in some instances. Maximum sentence for that is life imprisonment. Good deterent that.
