Having come within an inch of destroying the Labour Party and having turned Thatcherism into a two-party philosophy for 15 years, they appear determined to spend the next 15 washing their dirty linen in public, courtesy of the right-wing press who are only too happy to pay them in order to fan the flames and distract attention from the ConDem disaster.

Why don't you all f-f-f-fade away? You're yesterday's men, you screwed up big time and nobody loves you anymore.

1. Strangely despite Brown allegedly being as mad as a box of frogs

Darling was quite happy to serve as his Chancellor throughout his premiership, trousering his ministerial salary and bumping up his pension. One would have thought that a man of Darling's supposed intelligence and integrity when confronted with a claimed incompetent, dysfunctional and volatile loon in charge would have resigned his office immediately and alerted the country to the peril it faced. Instead he waited until now to publish a kiss and tell memoir letting us know how awful it was working for Brown. To be honest it all rather smacks of an attempt by Darling to absolve hmself of any blame for economic mismanagement by a government in which he was happy to serve as a Minister under both Blair and Brown. Of course, it might also an obvious desire by Darling to cash in now on his memoirs before the passing of time turns him into just another historical footnote.

2. The sooner the better.
Meanwhile, it might be helpful if the two Eds managed to come up with at least the bare bones of a fair and decent economic strategy ....

3. Yes. Ugh.
Whether out of spite or greed or both, Darling is playing into the hands of the Tories. And giving aid and comfort to those who blame Labour not for their long imitation of Thatcherism, but for allegedly spending too much on the public services. And of all times to choose, just before the NHS vote!

And I just HATE all this smear-campaigning based on personalities rather than issues. This used to be more an American phenomenon, with noted exceptions such as the vile 1980s campaign against Peter Tatchell; but the personal nature of the right-wing campaigns against Gordon Brown could rival Lee Atwater's smearing of Dukakis or the swiftboating of Kerry any day of the week. And Darling is just playing into that game.

I have caught myself humming, 'Oh Darling's not my darling' to the tune of "Charlie is my darling".

Once again - ugh!
