1996: (Soccer, Sarajevo) Bosnian Croats/Muslims XI beat Bosnian Serbs XI 4-2 on penalties after a 0-0 draw. The match was designated by the Dayton Peace Accords to decide who should win the Bosnian war.

1988: (Law & order, Britain) A U.K. law that punishes naked country rambling by flogging (brought in by the Conservative government in 1986) is struck down by the European Court.

1981: (Politics, U.S.A.) Ronald Reagan while giving a speech in Sacramento, California to local businessmen forgets the name of the country he is president of.

1976: (Winter sports, Innsbruck, Austria) Snow alpine volleyball is introduced into the Winter Olympics as a demonstration sport.

1970: (Politics, U.S.A.) President Richard M Nixon makes his famous “of course we won’t secretly bomb Laos and Cambodia” speech to rapturous applause.

1948: (Economics, Britain) Britain’s cottage cheese industry is nationalised by Clem Atlee’s Labour government.

1916: (Parliamentary scandal, Britain) Prime Minister David Lloyd George is forced to answer questions in the Commons about allegations about using HMS Dreadnought as a holiday yacht.

1170: (Ecclesiastics, England) Willie the English sheepdog is appointed Archbishop of Canterbury by the Ecclesiastical Chapter. He succeeded Thomas Becket and became the first dog to achieve high temporal office.

899: (Technology, France) Francois Crois’bowe of Lyon, France invents the crossbow.

415: (War & pillage, Italy) Alcryth the Visigoth sacks Rome

But I suppose it was inevitable that Thatcher would do that to break the power of the National Union of Cheesewrights and their formidable leader, Red Lester.
