She doesn't LOOK that scary, but don't judge a book by its cover. However, I fear the Germans are going to put her and the CSU in...btw, the CSU have HUGE support in Bavaria in particular, hot bed of German Nationalism and Neo-Nazi sympathies.

Most German Conservative leaders haven't really been all that bad; but Merkel looks like a Thatcher-wannabe.

I think the vote is more against Schroeder and the current economic situation, rather than for Merkel, so perhaps things will change soon. However, probably here in 1979, the vote was more against Callaghan and the economic situation, rather than for Thatcher, and look what happened. Here's to Germany NOT getting 18 years of Merkel-ism!

You know something odd? Callaghan was more popular than Thatcher, it was the Labour Party as a whole that actually lost the election. I remember I watched an Election '79 programme on the BBC Parliament Channel last year, and they had a poll, who'd you prefer as PM and Callaghan beat Thatcher.

Obviously I think her election would be bad news and would probably lead to Germany buying much more heavily into the War on Terra, but I tend to think the Thatcher comparisons are a bit of an overstatement- from what I've heard, she doesn't really have much in the way of either firm ideology or a particularly strong hold over her party (let alone the rest of the coalition). One German friend of mine's view was that she'd basically drag germany bag to the stagnation of the Kohl years.

I could be way off- after all, Thatcher actually ran a fairly moderate campaign in 1979 compared to a lot of what she ended up doing. But I really think the media slaps the "<insert name of contry>'s Thatcher" label far too readily on any female conservative leader- they did it to Kim Campbell back in '93, to give one example.

E.g. for Bush - though it turned out that the term was inadequate. Thatcher, with all her faults, was at least not a theocrat.

It wasn't my intention to criticise you personally for making the comparison, if you think Merkel is that right wing then I agree it's a fair one (though, as i said, not one I'm sure I agree with- not yet, at least). However, having seen this comparison increasingly crop up in the British press lately, I really do think they tend to lazily characterise female heads or potential heads of government as being "Thatchers" purely on the basis of their coming from that same 51% of the population as the evil one. I don't think they even neccesarily have to be conservatives, going way back I'm sure I remember Edith Cresson being described as the "French Thatcher"- and she was a socialist!

But where would they be without us. I lived in Germany from 1974-2002 in the military and after I retired from the military. I firmly believe that the only reason we invaded France in 1944 was not so much to beat Germany, but to keep Russia from taking all of Europe after it ran over Germany. After the war we stayed and spent untold billions of dollars to keep Europe free. During this time europe was able to rebuild and use the savings from not having to have a huge military to create the great social programs they have today. I love europe and at the same time I wish they could remember where would they be at today it wasn't for us.

I am not grateful to Bush. He was born in 1946, and had nothing to do with the last war.

I am glad that Russia was prevented from taking over the whole of Europe and have nothing but hatred and horror for Stalinism. But at the same time, I think it's a great pity that Reagan was so ready to build up the forerunners of the Taliban, just because they were opposing the Russians.

Countries and governments change hugely with time; and one can't base political support on what was going on 60, 30 or even 10 years ago. As regards Germany, I am very glad that they are NOT the same country as they were in WW2!!!

Looks like Schroder's making a bit of a comeback now after looking dead and buried a few weeks ago. It'll also be interesting to see how the new (well, sort of) Left Party does, if only because one of their leaders is Oskar Lafontaine- one of the Sun's favourite hate figures from the late 90s when he was pushing european tax harmonisation (which of course translates into Sunese as "pushing for the assimilation of Britain into a kraut-led commie superstate dictatorship").
