Expulsions illegal, UN tells Clarke
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/terrorism/story/0,15935,1555931,00.html

-snip-
A senior UN representative last night threatened to cite the British government for violation of human rights over its planned deportations of alleged terrorist sympathisers.

Manfred Novak, the UN human rights commission's special investigator on torture, told the Guardian he is seeking permission through the Foreign Office to visit Britain to discuss the issue with the home secretary, Charles Clarke.

In a statement on Tuesday night, Prof Novak said that the government's intention to return radical preachers to their countries of origin, even though some of those countries have a track record of human rights abuses, "reflects a tendency in Europe to circumvent the international obligation not to deport anybody if there is a serious risk that he or she might be subjected to torture".

So how will our fearless leader react, if he ever getsback from Barbados?

1. You mean he's on vacation too?
How clever. Barbados must be much more interesting than Crawford, Texas though. WTF are they THINKING? The world is on fire and they eat CAKE! sh*t. Try that at your job if you want a pink slip.

2. To be honest - I think that he might like it
These expulsions are very popular with Joe Mail/Sun Reader - letting Charles Clarke pick a small fight with the U.N. over it could work out well for him. I can almost imagine the outraged editorials in both Sun and Mail about it (and high-brow outrage in the Torygraph as well).

3. An important element in neoconnery is the demonisation of the UN ...
... on the grounds that if the US of A, the U of K and the Waltzing Matildas are the good guys, the rest of the world must be the bad guys.

As you say, this plays well with the Bonehead Brigade for whom most of the globe is enscribed "Here be Dragons, Perfidious Johnny Foreigners, Greasy Dagoes and Turbanned Ruffians."

4. Agreed- this is a chance for Blair and Clarke to play the tough guys
Standing up to the dastardly foreigners trying to tell us how we should run our country- it's practically a gift-wrapped opportunity for them.
