OK, where's your favourite place in the UK?

Mine's the Lake District where I grew up and left 30 years ago for the youthful excitement of London. Planning to move back now.

1. LOVE the Lake district

Windemere and all the rest (plus, I'm a children's book illustrator, and it's home to Beatrix Potter). Enjoy Stratford upon Avon, but it gets awfully touristy. Canterbury is nice too, as are the Cotswolds...*sigh*, and here I am struck in %$#@*&* Florida!

2. London.

There's nowhere else as interesting. I love it here.

I grew up in Oxford and still think of it very fondy, ditto with Cambridge, where I studied, and mt parents presently live in Dorset, introducing me to the charms of Lyme Regis. But there's nowhere quite like London.

3. Wales!

All of it. But especially the area around Snowdonia... unbelievable.

I lived near London 66-70 (Farnham Common, Beaconsfield) while my father (a hardcore liberal Colonel) was stationed in the Air Force there. I did a number of weekend hitchhikes around Cornwall and Wales. Love the soft harshness of the landscape. The Youth Hostel at Land's End is wonderful.

For oddity value (and pottery) it's hard to beat Portmeirion, especially if you're a fan of Patrick McGoohan's The Prisoner.

And then there's Oxford, where I spent 6 months on an exchange program. Punting on the Cherwell. Mmmm.

9. Stac Polly and the Assynt Highlands

The mountain Suilvin makes my hair stand up, and the Cuillins on Skye
do as well. The stone of the earth in that area is several hundred
millions of years old, some of the oldest exposed crust on the earth's
surface. It is profoundly awesome, and i think that area is one of the
very most powerful energy centers of the earth, as much as monument
valley/grand canyon area is for the USA.

10. Edinburgh

getting lost for hours in Holyrood Park- then walking just down the road to take in the treasures of the Museum of Scotland or the Scottish National Gallery. Plus there are so very many pubs...

11. Hay-on-Wye

Books, books, books, books, books and more books. Plus a stonking great festival once a year.

12. York.

I also like Norwich and the surrounding area. But to be honest, I'm very forgiving and like most places except for Bradford, Reading, and Glasgow (I was brought up in Edinburgh with a healthy distaste for anyone with a Scots dialect).

13. The Peak District.

14. 1) Newcastle upon Tyne - joint with Paris as favourite place in the world.

2) Northumberland Coast. Alnmouth, Warkworth,Craster and Dunstanburgh. Unique Lindisfarne. Pevsner thought Berwick-on-Tweed was one of the most historically exciting towns in England.
3) Scarborough - Fascinating town! Much under-rated. Lots of history. Nice people.
4) York - a bit touristy but architecturally wonderful.
Joint 5) Edinburgh - beautiful, cultured.
Joint 5) Leicester - another under-rated city. New Walk is second only to Newcastle Town Moor for inner-city greenery.

15. I haven't explored everywhere, but...

I have chosen to live in Oxford, and like it very much - as much for its compactness, and ease of getting from A to B, as for its impressive old architecture.

I also like Bath very much. And Hay on Wye - how could one not like a place chock-full of second-hand bookshops? - though I haven't managed to go very often.

I'm hoping it wasn't serious.

Plus it's not like I live in a mansion or anything. It's a house next to the moor and it's often cold and snowy in the winter and I have to chase sheep off the road to drive down into town. Costs an absolute bomb going out in Leeds because of the necessity of paying a fortune to get a taxi home after a night out.

It is pretty here though.

Edited to say: I know what you mean about Bradford - I went to university there. The University is OK enough, but Bradford itself is a hellhole.

Also, I see you live in York, which is pretty jammy too! I'm going to the races there on Wednesday, which is always a fine day out.

Really, no hard feelings, but that has to be one of the most beautiful scenes, ever.
And I feel your pain with the sheep. I estimate that sheep add a good half hour to the journey from here to Bradford.

31. I do my best to stay out of Bradford.

Although, having said that, isn't it funny how quickly you can be out of Bradford into the kind of countryside I live in? When I was in uni there (a "mature" student who graduated in 2003, which is amusing to me because I don't always behave in a mature fashion), I used to drive to Bradford from Ilkley by going over the moor. I could sort of feel my blood pressure rising the closer I got to the city centre. It would calm down when I parked near the university, but rise once more when I started driving through the city again on my way out, and then I would calm down as soon as I got on the moor road heading back home.

27. I'm unsure why Bradford is so bad.

But it has everything. Crime, poverty, racism, ugliness... although I'll grant you the uni is good. And so is York :).
