There's nothing like a good, old fashioned nutter to take the heat away from some of those pesky issues that the Howard govt wants us to quickly forget about. The really sad thing is I think there's possibly some folk I've encountered here at DU who wouldn't see anything wrong with what she said :(
Danna Vale recycles 'populate or perish' politicsTONY EASTLEY: The former minister Danna Vale is one of five Coalition women who want Parliament to have the final say on the use of the abortion drug RU-486, and yesterday the likeminded women got together for a press conference.
But Mrs Vale got "off message," as they say in Canberra, and the conference ended up focussing on Mrs Vale's thoughts on Muslims.
She said Australians were "aborting themselves out of existence," and all the while Muslims were having more children.
Muslim and Christian leaders have both condemned her remarks as outlandish, and her likeminded colleagues, on RU-486, have distanced themselves from her remarks.
Francene Norton reports.
FRANCENE NORTON: Danna Vale's remarks linking abortion and Muslims have shocked the President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Dr Ameer Ali.
AMEER ALI: How low can this person get to in terms of racism? It's the most racist comment I've ever seen.
FRANCENE NORTON: Mrs Vale prompted the condemnation when she raised concerns about the effect the abortion rate is having on the makeup of Australia's future population.
She is among five female Coalition MPs proposing an amendment to the RU-486 Bill, which will be debated in the House of Representatives this week.
But the Coalition backbencher suggested that one of the reasons she wants the Parliament to have the final say on the abortion drug is to ensure Australia doesn't become dominated by Muslims.
DANNA VALE: I've actually read in the Daily Telegraph, where a certain Imam from the Lakemba mosque actually said that Australia's going to be a Muslim nation in 50 years' time.
I didn't believe him at the time, but you know, when you actually look at the birth rates and you look at the fact that we are aborting ourselves almost out of existence by 100,000 abortions every year, and that's on a guesstimate, you multiply that by 50 years. That's five million potential Australians we won't have here.
